Helen Whittaker's ecclesiastical artwork explores the theme of 'pilgrimage' in three dimensions. Two sculptured figures, prayer benches and a candle-stand are bathed in light from a new stained glass window.
The scheme has four elements: The Pilgrim Window.
A pilgrim can be seen sitting at the base of the window in prayer, contemplating his journey. Above, lines of pilgrims toil upwards towards their goal, the glow of light at the heart of the window.
Two Life-Sized Sculpted Figures in Copper.
Facing the new window are two pilgrims sculpted in triangles of sheet copper. Both gaze at the glowing light at the heart of the window which is reflected in their own hearts of glass.
The Candle Stand.
The candle stand is designed in the form of a cross symbolically representing the pilgrims journey upwards,in common with the theme of the window.
Prayer Benches and Seating for Meditation and Prayer.
The dark oaked furnishings are shaped and positioned to view both sculpture and window as one enters the Retro-Quire by either entrance.
