Barley Studio was established by Managing Director Keith Barley MBE in 1973, and has an international reputation for excellence in stained glass creation and conservation for cathedrals, stately homes, parish churches and prestigious secular buildings across the UK and beyond. The multi-skilled team includes the award-winning artist and designer Helen Whittaker FMGP, ICON accredited conservators (ACRs), painters, glaziers and metalworkers.
In November 2017 Barley Studio celebrated the installation of Keith Barley as Master of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass. Keith is honoured to be one of the few practising glaziers elected to be Master of this ancient Livery, first recorded in 1328.
Our purpose-built stained glass studio is sited just a few miles from the historic city of York, a treasure-house for stained glass, a craft which has flourished there from the 13th century right up to the present day. We have dedicated areas for creation, conservation, glazing and metalwork, complete with all necessary equipment for safe and efficient working, as well as secure storage and office spaces.
Every project is unique and so requires an individually tailored approach developed in consultation with our clients, whether devising conservation strategies for historic glass, creating striking new designs to commission or producing period style plain glazing from our ‘Barley Bent’ range. Our team is dedicated to achieving excellence in all aspects of our art and craft.
As accredited conservators we offer advice, produce reports and undertake work on secular and ecclesiastical buildings throughout the UK. All work is carried out in-house by our highly trained and multi-skilled team. We adhere to industry standards of health and safety, with employees PASMA trained in mobile scaffolding and carrying Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) cards.

We discussed at length the philosophical approach to all aspects of proposed conservation so as to retain not only the glass, but as much of the lead work as possible…. The result of all this care and analysis is a scholarly exemplar of conservation work that deserves significant recognition.

I have worked with Barley Studios on designs and installations for a number of important projects including Claridge’s and The Connaught Hotel, as well as a number of Grade 1 private homes. I have always found them to be personable, professional and timely and their work is excellent.
