Mechanical Protection: Wire Guards

Wire guards provide protection to stained glass windows against mechanical damage from stones or other missiles, whether accidental or due to deliberate vandalism. Historically, guards have been made from iron or galvanised wire that eventually rust, or sometimes copper wire, which is durable but can stain the surrounding stonework green.

Barley Studio’s metalwork department fabricate and supply guards in stainless steel of weld mesh size 3″ x 1/2″ x 12swg; strong enough to provide good mechanical protection, whilst still being fine enough that the guards are reasonably unobtrusive.

Guards are powder coated to a black finish, and individually made to fit within the stonework reveal of each opening. Guards are screw fixed using black coated stainless steel clips, specially made to our own design to be as discreet as possible and requiring minimal intervention to the stonework.
