Apothecaries' Hall, London
Three Heraldic Windows (each 0.4m x 0.5m) 2025
It was a great privilege to create three heraldic panels for the Apothecaries’ Hall, one of the oldest Livery Halls in the City of London. The Society of Apothecaries derives its membership from the medical and pharmacy professions.
Every Past Master of the Company has a panel displayed in the Georgian style windows of the Great Hall, and my new panels commemorate Professor Jane Anderson CBE FRCP (Master 2021-22), Jonathan Holliday CVO (Master 2022-23) and Air Vice-Marshal Aroop Mozumder (Master 2023-24).
Professor Jane Anderson specialises in the management of HIV/AIDS, and her coat of arms has the first use of the AIDS ribbon in heraldry.
I have taken inspiration from William Morris’ ‘Trellis’ design and placed the Apothecary’s Rose (Rosa gallica var. officinalis) growing through it. The thorns of the rose give reference to the pain of illness; while the flowers show that, with treatment, the plant can still grow and flourish.
Jonathan James Cornelius Holliday was Apothecary to Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor between 1997 and 2018.
His coat of arms contains the motto in Welsh ‘Bydd Popeth yn Iawn’ meaning ‘All will be well’. The shield depicts 3 suns in splendour and 3 leeks, with the crest of a Dalmatian holding an Eton Lily.
Air Vice-Marshal Aroop Mozumder is currently the Medical Director of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, following a long and distinguished military medical career in the RAF, where he rose to become Director General of the RAF Medical Services.
Aroop’s Coat of Arms combines the winged staff and twin serpents, the symbol of the RAF Medical Services, with the Ashoka Chakra, the symbol of right duty (Dharma) in the Hindu religion, on an RAF blue background. The crest, a Bengal Tiger, is the emblem of the RAF Squadrons he deployed with on military operations and also reflects his Bengali heritage.
