Barley Studio carried out repair and restoration work to the glazing of both the sash windows and the spectacular glass dome of the Orangery. After sample installations, our Barley Bent BB1 glass was specified to replace lost or badly broken panes, as it gave the best match in appearance to the original crown sheet glass.
Calke Abbey, in Derbyshire, is a Grade I listed country house. Built by Sir John Harpur in 1701-4 it remained in the Harpur-Crewe family for over 300 years until it was passed to the National Trust in 1985, in lieu of death duties.
The Orangery is one of the oldest surviving garden buildings, dating back to 1777. The nine-metre-high glass dome was added in 1836 by the Civil Engineer John Harrison of Derby (1784-1861) to improve the light quality within. Located inside the Walled Kitchen Garden, the Orangery was in a severely dilapidated state before conservation work began in 1990.
