Barley Studio repair and replicate decorative leaded lights for domestic properties of all periods, matching historic glasses as closely as possible. We stock a wide range of colours and textures of modern glasses, and also keep a substantial glass bank of historic glasses, many of which are no longer produced.
We can produce new leaded lights to your individual requirements, based on historic glazing patterns or to completely new designs. We work directly with clients and also collaborate with joinery firms such as Houghtons of York.
New leaded lights matching original glazing patterns
We can create leaded lights prepared to be sealed within double glazed units, visually achieving the beauty of a leaded light whilst fully insulating the property. Existing stained glass panels can be removed and adapted to be re-installed within double glazed units. For properties already having double glazing, stained glass panels can be independently framed and installed in front of the existing unit.
New leaded lights set into double glazed units and bespoke doors created by Houghtons of York
Two pairs of leaded light panels were created for a private client in York. The inspiration for the design was the work of Scottish architect and designer George Walton, a contemporary of Rennie Mackintosh, who remodelled the interior of the Elm Bank Hotel on The Mount, York, in 1898. The panels were created using opalescent, antique and clear textured glasses and spun bullions, and were framed to fix in front of the existing glazing.
A series of leaded light panels were created as part of a refurbishment of Betty’s Café Tea Rooms in York, to a design inspired by the existing transom panels within the building. Antique and textured glasses were carefully selected to harmonise with the original glazing. The new panels were mounted into a bronze framed screen, with laminated glass to either side of the leaded lights for security.
