Mechanical Protection: Secondary Glazing

Adding a second glazing layer, either to the inside or the outside of the original glazing, can improve both the heat insulation and sound-proofing of a building while preserving historic stained glass or leaded glazing in situ.

Barley Studio fabricate secondary glazing in either sheet glass or laminated glass, mounted in bronze frames that closely fit the window opening and with lead flashing around the perimeter. The frames are screw fixed in position and so are easily removable for future maintenance.

In projects from the Whistler window at St Andrew’s Church, Abbots Ripton, to the Palace of Westminster in London (World Heritage Site), Barley Studio have provided external secondary glazing in laminated glass, giving mechanical protection to these important windows while also improving the insulation of the building.
