Ely Cathedral

New Processional Way – Fourteen Geometric Lights 2000

Ely Cathedral’s Millennium project, to install a link between the 14th century Lady Chapel and the Cathedral, provided the opportunity to design a new glazing scheme within the original cloister windows. As Keith Barley is Master Glazier to Ely Cathedral, Barley Studio was approached by Cathedral Architect Jane Kennedy to create this scheme.

The brief for the project was to produce a design that was not datable, but sympathetic to the surrounding fabric, and incorporating donor inscriptions, symbols of the Virgin Mary and of Ely Cathedral.

The three, four-light windows and flanking door-panel lights are based on geometric principles, glazed in tints and colours of the 14th century. The symbols are encompassed by decorative borders, foliated motifs and cross-hatching. The painting is traditional in subject matter and format, though contemporary in technique.
