Design and Creation with Helen Whittaker

Helen is a renowned artist and designer, highly regarded for her new stained glass windows and architectural sculpture in glass and copper.

She aims to engage the viewer through good design and craftsmanship, creating energy and movement intertwining contemporary and traditional elements.

Helen works in partnership with the client, drawing inspiration from the brief, the building and the setting to create individual artworks in a variety of styles.

Helen Whittaker MBE is Creative Director of Barley Studio, where all work is carried out in-house in the purpose-built Studio in York. She has over 30 years of experience in stained glass creation and restoration painting and has completed more than 100 commissions for ecclesiastical, secular and domestic buildings all over the UK and internationally.

Helen was selected to help promote the United Kingdom Government’s international ‘GREAT Britain’ campaign to showcase British talent in the creative sector. In 2024 Helen was awarded an MBE “for services to the creation and conservation of stained and architectural glass art” in the King’s Birthday Honours.

"Helen Whittaker, Barley Studio’s inspired creative designer, has the gift of turning a written brief into a window of outstanding artistic merit as brilliantly shown in the window she designed for the Royal Air Force Club, turning a ‘dead end’ into the artistic focus of the building."
Wing Commander Michael Gilbert, Chairman Art Committee, RAF Club, London
"Helen’s design for the memorial window in our church emerged the winner after a rigorous competition. The design is based on a thorough understanding of the Jesse story brought vividly to life by Helen’s artistry. This new window is highly acclaimed by all and is seen as the most important stained glass creation in Wales since the war. Helen worked tirelessly on the project with the support of the Barley Studio team. The completion of such a significant project on time was a magnificent achievement, and demonstrates the professionalism and commitment that mark Helen out as an exceptional artist."
Sir Robert Hayman-Joyce, Project Director, St Mary’s Winston Appeal, Abergavenny
